Unlock access to justice

The cause is great. Help the Volunteer Legal Services Corporation (VLSC) continue to provide free legal assistance to low-income and poor people in Alameda County.

The need is urgent. Approximately 80% of VLSC cases are family-related, including divorce and custody issues. We need your help to prevent the heartbreak of fractured families. Each month VLSC turns away clients because we do not have the resources to meet this tremendous need for legal services. This means hundreds of people without legal representation - without access to justice!

The time is now. We know that you believe as we do that access to justice is a basic tenet of a free society and a vital component of democracy. As a just society we have an ethical obligation to ensure that all individuals have equal access to the law's protection.

Here are just a few of the people VLSC has assisted:

• Four children, abandoned by their father and left with their mentally ill, substance-abusing mother, are safe now in the guardianship of their grandmother.
• An elderly woman on a fixed income, hounded and sued by creditors who had bilked her into signing oppressive loan documents, had the case against her dismissed on the eve of trial.
• A mother whose son was kidnapped and taken out of the country by her estranged husband has been reunited with her son.
